ISO 9001:2026 transition plan: seven steps and a checklist
If your company is certified to ISO 9001:2015, sooner or later you will face a transition audit. The good news is that the revision is moderate and fits within your normal audit cycle. This is the plan we follow with our clients, with a checklist to know where to start.

How do you transition to ISO 9001:2026?
In seven steps: get the standard and train the team, run a gap analysis, define with top management how quality culture and ethics are promoted, separate risks and opportunities, reinforce management of change, run the internal audit and management review against the new version, and agree with your certification body in which audit the transition will take place.
The seven steps
- Train those who will lead the transition. The system owner, process owners and internal auditors need an update course: not to memorize clauses, but to tell what changes from what does not.
- Run a gap analysis. Compare your system with ISO 9001:2026 clause by clause. In most companies the gaps concentrate in 5.1.1, 6.1, 6.3, 7.3 and 9.3.2.
- Work on quality culture and ethics with top management. It takes the longest to show evidence, so it goes first. Define how it is promoted, how it is communicated and which records prove it.
- Separate risks and opportunities. A risk matrix with controls and an opportunity register with projects, owners and dates.
- Reinforce management of change. Add communication of the change, monitoring of its effectiveness and review of results to your procedure.
- Audit and review against the new version. A full internal audit against ISO 9001:2026 and a management review with the new input on interested parties.
- Schedule the transition audit. It is usually done together with a surveillance or recertification audit to avoid extra days. Ask early: dates fill up at the end of the period.

Dates worth keeping in sight
- 16 September 2026: confirmed publication date of ISO 9001:2026.
- Transition period: three years from publication are expected; the IAF and accreditation bodies formalize it.
- Around September 2029: forecast end of validity of ISO 9001:2015 certificates. Confirm it with your certification body.
- ISO 14001:2026: published in April 2026, with its own transition until April 2029. If you hold both standards, plan them together.
How much work is it, really?
For an SME with a healthy system, a few weeks of work spread over several months. For a multi-site corporation, the challenge is coordination more than technique. In both cases, what is expensive is leaving it for the last year: saturated consultants, auditors with no dates and cultural changes that cannot be evidenced in two weeks.
