When does ISO 9001:2026 come into force?

The confirmed publication date is 16 September 2026. From then on certification bodies can audit against the new version once they are accredited for it, and the transition period begins for organizations certified to ISO 9001:2015.

Does ISO 9001:2026 affect companies that also hold IATF 16949?

IATF 16949 builds on ISO 9001, so the changes will eventually flow into the automotive scheme once IATF publishes its rules. Meanwhile it pays to move on the common ground: quality culture, separated risks and opportunities, and management of change.

How long do I have to transition?

A three-year transition period is expected, as in the 2015 revision, which would put the deadline around September 2029. The IAF and accreditation bodies formalize it: confirm the exact date with your certification body.

Is my ISO 9001:2015 certificate still valid?

Yes, throughout the transition period. The usual approach is to do the transition audit together with a surveillance or recertification audit, to avoid paying extra audit days.

Do we have to redo all the documentation?

No. The structure and most requirements remain. The work concentrates on evidencing quality culture and ethical behaviour, separating risks and opportunities, reinforcing management of change and updating the management review inputs.

Does ISO 9001:2026 require artificial intelligence or digitalization?

No. During the revision there was talk of AI and digital transformation requirements, but they do not appear in the final text. The standard remains technology-neutral.

Should we wait or start now?

Starting with the gap analysis now costs little and avoids the last-year bottleneck, when consultants and certification bodies are saturated. The cultural changes —leadership and ethics— are the ones that take longest to show evidence.

Risk is defined as a negative effect. Actions for risks (6.1.2) and for opportunities (6.1.3) are planned separately.

Reinforced management of change (6.3)

Three new requirements: communicate changes, monitor their effectiveness and review their results.

Interested parties and management review

You must determine which interested-party requirements will be addressed (4.2 c), and changes in them feed the management review (9.3.2).
