IATF 16949 and AS9100 versus ISO 9001:2026: what changes for automotive and aerospace

ISO 9001:2026 was published on 16 September 2026, but IATF 16949 and AS9100 —the automotive and aerospace quality schemes— build on ISO 9001:2015 and have their own bodies and calendars. Here is what is known today, what is not yet, and what is worth moving on in a plant that holds both.

Do IATF 16949 or AS9100 change with ISO 9001:2026?

Not yet. Both schemes incorporate the ISO 9001:2015 text and add sector requirements; the new ISO 9001 edition only reaches them when their bodies —the IATF for automotive and the IAQG for aerospace— publish a revision and its transition rules. Until then, IATF 16949:2016 and AS9100 Rev. D remain in force and are audited as before. What does change right away is the “pure” ISO 9001 certificate that many plants keep alongside the sector one, or require from their tier-2 and tier-3 suppliers: that one does transition to 2026 before 30 September 2029.

Status of each scheme (October 2026)

SchemeCurrent baseWhat has been announcedWhat to do today
ISO 90012026 edition published 16 Sep 2026Transition until 30 Sep 2029 (Global ACI); no initial 2015 certificates from 31 Mar 2028Gap analysis and transition at the 2027 surveillance audit
IATF 16949IATF 16949:2016, on ISO 9001:2015Revision expected around late 2026 or 2027, subject to IATF confirmation; the 2016 version remains valid until it is published and a transition is confirmedMove on the common ground (quality culture, risks and opportunities, management of change) and wait for the rules
AS9100 / IA9100AS9100 Rev. D, on ISO 9001:2015The IAQG announced a limited-change revision, published as IA9100 and still based on ISO 9001:2015, with an implementation period of about twelve monthsPrepare for IA9100 (limited changes) and, separately, transition the ISO 9001 certificate if you keep one

The IATF and IAQG dates are forecasts from the bodies themselves and from certifiers; confirm them with your certification body before planning. The ISO 9001:2026 dates are official: document Global ACI-TECH-3-TR 2029-09-30.

What you can move on without waiting for anyone

  • Quality culture and ethical behaviour (5.1.1 and 7.3). Carmakers and aerospace integrators already audit it in their codes of conduct and product safety culture; evidencing it in the system is work done in advance for any future version.
  • Separate risks and opportunities (6.1). Process risk analysis (FMEA) and product risk management already exist; what is missing is separating opportunities with their projects.
  • Management of change (6.3). The sector's engineering and process change control is stricter than the standard's; extend it to management system changes with monitoring, communication and review.
  • Management review (9.3.2). Add changes in the needs and expectations of interested parties; customer-specific requirements (CSRs) are the perfect example.

Three typical situations in Mexico

  1. Plant with IATF 16949 and a separate ISO 9001 certificate. Transition the ISO 9001 to 2026 at your 2027 surveillance and keep IATF as is. If the same body audits both, ask for the transition audit to be combined.
  2. Tier-2 supplier with ISO 9001 only. Your tier-1 customer will require a valid ISO 9001: the transition to 2026 is mandatory before 30 September 2029 and it pays to do it before their second-party audits ask for it.
  3. Aerospace plant with AS9100. Prepare for IA9100 (limited changes on the 2015 base) and, if you keep an ISO 9001 certificate, transition it to 2026 separately. Both jobs share 80 % of the evidence.

We serve these situations with pages and teams by location: ISO 9001:2026 transition in Querétaro (aerospace and automotive), Puebla, Monterrey and the state of Guanajuato. If your new supplier is not certified yet, the path is direct ISO 9001:2026 certification, which later serves as the base for IATF 16949.

ISO 14001:2026 changes versus 2015, clause by clause

ISO 14001:2026 was published on 15 April 2026 and is a moderate revision: it keeps the ten clauses, the PDCA cycle and the risk and opportunity approach. Only two requirements are new (planning of changes and objectives for each internal audit); the rest are extensions and clarifications. Here are the changes, clause by clause, and what they mean for a certified environmental management system.
