How to Gamify Your Employee Training

Gamifying training means designing the learning program with game mechanics: clear goals turned into challenges, visible progress through levels and badges, and rewards that actually matter. The process has five steps: define the behavior you want, choose the mechanics, design the incentive economy, build the narrative, and measure.

The five steps

1. Define the behavior, not the content: "salespeople apply the objection-handling protocol", not "everyone watches the course". 2. Choose aligned mechanics: points for practice, levels for mastery, team-based leaderboards (never individual rankings on sensitive topics). 3. Design the incentives: redeemable digital rewards (Starbucks, Librerías Gandhi gift cards) outperform symbolic ones when participation is the challenge. 4. Add narrative and avatars your people identify with: diversity of representation matters, and it shows in adoption. 5. Measure: participation, completion, and on-the-job application.

The tools we use

For live sessions: Kahoot and Booklet for challenges and trivia; Excalidraw for visual co-creation. For self-paced learning: the LMS's native mechanics plus custom gamified learning objects. The most common mistake: gamifying the packaging instead of the experience — points on top of a PDF are still a PDF.
